First of all, I think that daddy blogger Chris Bernholdt is full of SH$% with his wanting to ban play dates. Just because you want to schedule a play date, that does not mean that you are taking away your children's ability to play independently resulting in your children blaming you when they are bored. He must have had some pretty bad play dates to have such a negative viewpoint, but I absolutely love play dates, and I know my son does too.
Are the play dates taking away his ability to be an independent thinker? Um no. I'm pretty sure that he's got a very creative mind that can amuse itself with the strangest things... like when we were on a three-mile walk at the cabin last week, and he sat in the stroller for the entire time playing with two hair clips and a hairband, making pretend food, and babbling gibberish to himself.
Do I feel like I have to have a perfectly clean house and elaborate snacks for play dates? No... maybe for a first play date to make a good impression, but once you find families that jive with you and your kids, there's no need for all of that because those things aren't the focus of the play date. Play dates are for both the adults and the children: adults get to revel in the shared misery that is parenthood while the children learn sharing and socialization skills. All good things, all good things.
When my plan was to have only one child and a nanny, I worried that he would have socialization issues, and that was the reason I pushed so hard for play dates in the beginning. However, now he has such great little friends that yes, I did choose for him, but it's not like he won't still find friends on his own - I mean, duh.
So while my son waits for his younger brother to be old enough to play with him, I will continue to schedule regular play dates without fear of making my child super dependent on me for fun because I know that I am not the type of parent who will schedule every minute of his childhood, stealing away his ability to be an independent thinker.
