As some of you know from Facebook, I became interested in oil pulling from a post someone else shared (click on button below to see the original article). I started oil pulling (for 20 minutes every morning) on Friday, March 7th, 2014, and here are my conclusions:
Claim 1: Whitens Teeth
Yes, it does whiten teeth! Good for me because that's pretty much why I wanted to try it. They're not bright white now, but I have noticed a difference, the same (if not more) than when I tried Crest White Strips. Those whitening strips hurt my sensitive teeth so much that it was almost like being on a diet - didn't want to eat at all. I feel like my photos need less Photoshopping now to brighten teeth!
Claim 2: Strengthens Teeth, Gums, & Jaw
I don't know how you can prove that something strengthened your jaw unless you're a circus performer hanging from you face. Inconclusive. My gums still bleed when I floss, but that's probably because I'm pregnant.
Claim 3: Prevents Cavities & Gingivitis
Well, I've been using it for less than a month and haven't been to the dentist before and after - inconclusive.
Claim 4: Banishes Bad Breath
No complaints from hubby, but rather inconclusive. Maybe I should eat a Greek salad, oil pull, and then see!
Claim 5: Relieves Headaches and Hangovers
I'm one to have frequent headaches, pregnant or not, but I don't know if I've noticed having less since trying this. Clearly, I'm not going to be one to give advice about hangovers...
Claim 6: Helps You Sleep Better
The first few nights I thought maybe this was true, but after a while, my sleep patterns have been the same - crappy! Could be because I'm in the third trimester and am up ever 2 hours to pee!
Claim 7: Clears Sinuses
I don't think so.
Claim 8: Detoxifies the Bod
How would you ever know if you were detoxified unless you had blood work done before and after. Inconclusive.
Claim 9: Helps Ease the Symptoms of Acne, Eczema, Psoriasis, and Other Skin Care Issues
I have eczema that has gotten much worse since having Leighton, and pregnancy isn't make it any better. However, I have not noticed a significant change regarding it, and as far as acne, I don't usually have issues with that (get a good cleanser!) pregnant or not. Inconclusive.
If you're looking for a natural teeth brightener, I'd recommend oil pulling. It's cheaper and less painful that white strips. I did have an incident during this time of biting my cheek, and no painful sores emerged. My son also developed a cold, and I still kissed him, hugged him, etc., but I never got it. Was it because I was oil pulling? I don't know. Was I detoxified?
My husband Mark also started oil pulling for a while. He had a canker sore, and the said that the oil pulling was helping ease the pain. However, he stopped after he developed several more canker sores all at once. He blamed the oil, but I didn't have that issue so I'm not sure I believe him.

Try it if you don't mind the taste of coconut. It can't really hurt...
