Today is the dreaded D-Day: Dye-ing day... my day to get a few years younger in 30 minutes.
Ever since I was 16, I have had gray hair to deal with. Why? Who knows; it's my curse. Having very dark hair makes those pesky little white demons even more apparent. Now that I’m in my 30’s, I have SO MUCH more gray to cover up (thanks to almost 10 years of marriage to Mark Frick and my little boy). Every three weeks like clockwork, I am dying my hair.
If I didn't dye my hair, I would look like a skunk, not cool like Stacy from TLC's What not to Wear or Rogue from X-MEN. *Sigh* I dread hair-dying day. It’s such a mess and a pain in the arse. And… I feel like it dulls the white tips of my pink-and-white manicure.
Sometimes when D-Day is approaching and I need to look my best, I use black waterproof mascara to hide the gray in my part or around my face. Sad, I know, but effective for short-term purposes (don't try this at home unless you have a steady hand, lest you come out looking like a freak!).
Being the obsessive crazy planner I am, I plan my 3-week hair dying around my nail salon visits so that shortly after the hair gets dyed, I get a refresh on the nails. It’s a good system, but it’s just exhausting. Sometimes I wonder what would happen if I just let myself go: no acrylic nails, no hair dye, no makeup… would anyone recognize me? I would probably age 20 years in a month’s time, and people would think that Leighton is my grandchild.
No, no, I'm not strong enough, not self-confident enough to let myself go. Would it save me time and money - You're darn toot'n! Oh well, this is me, and I like the way I look... for now. Maybe many years down the road, I'll be able to stop dye-ing, and I'll embrace being a female Silver Fox! Until then, I dye a little more every few weeks.
