One of the coolest things about having your own natural children is seeing what physical traits that they inherit from you or your spouse. Unfortunately, since I'm adopted, I will never know who I look like, but at least I am able to see myself and my husband in my own two little boys.
Luckily for them, they both have my nose (sorry Mark) and my Asian skin, but Leighton has my head shape, and Cambridge has Mark's. While they also both seem to have modified Asian eyes, their eyes are neither mine or Mark's... and my mom thinks that Leighton has Mark's dad's eye shape.
Because both of my boys seem to look more like their mother, does that mean that their personalities will be more like my husband's? God, I hope not. Leighton is in his full-on stink phase which (my mother-in-law informs me) is very similar to what Mark went through as a child of the same age. What have I gotten myself into?
Some children, however, do not end up looking like either parent. I have a good friend whose son looks nothing like the mom or dad and seems to resemble the mother's brothers most. Isn't it strange how genetics work and can skip around and pick characteristics from down the line?
In some rare cases, the children all tend to look exactly alike. One of Mark's best friends in college came from a family just like that. The downside to this phenomenon was that his friend's sister wanted to date my husband who couldn't see past the fact that she looked like her brother, and he felt like he would be dating his best male friend! Creepy.
Then there are the instance where a child looks nothing like either parent or doesn't act like either parent, and then people say, "Is that the mailman's child?" Which is funny because how many mailmen do you know who are affair worthy? Just sayin'... Although, the mailman I had when I lived in a duplex in St. Paul (when I was wrapping up college) was hot. He was a walking mailman with arms as big as his head and a tattoo that said "Iceman"... but my kids don't look like him...
