Okay, I'll be the first to admit that I'm not an expert on all children or even children of a different gender since mine are both male. However, there are times when I wonder if some of their disgusting behaviors are "boy things" or "kid things". Last evening as I was sitting next to another mother at swimming lessons, I watched in disgust as my three-and-a-half year old took pool water into his mouth only to spit it back into the pool grates... repeatedly.
"Boys are so gross" I muttered under my breath. Because I knew I wasn't the only one bearing witness to the grubbiness that I was unable to stop, I asked the mother sitting to my left, "Is that a boy thing, or a kid thing?" "Oh, that's a boy thing" she said with certainty... the certainty that only a mother of 4 children (of both sexes and varying ages, mind you) can speak with. Of course I took that opportunity to get her take on nose picking... and she wisely replied, "Oh, that's a kid thing... my 9-year-old daughter still does it."
Even though "boys will be boys", apparently all children are disgusting in some fashion until they are old and wise enough to realize how off-putting some of their habits can be. Until my children reach that point, however, that leaves me to endure seeing repulsive things that I cannot stop, things I myself cannot change. I just can't wait to see what appalling new habits the future holds.
